Your Data Is Gold — And Someone Is Stealing 70% of It on the Highway

Part 1 of 2

This article is the why. When you’re done, read Part 2 — The Data Wellness Model: A Self-Diagnosis Guide for Small Businesses for the how: diagnose exactly how data-sick your business is, and the treatment path to fix it.

Data, data everywhere… except in MY business!

Imagine you’re driving a truck down a highway. In the back, you’ve got 700 kilograms of pure gold. You’ve earned it. You’ve refined it. It’s yours.

But every few kilometres, someone takes a piece.

The first stop is a toll booth — government-mandated. You pay. Fair enough. You drive on. But at the next bend, someone reaches into the back and grabs a handful. Then another. Then another. By the time you reach your destination, you look in the back of the truck and there’s 200 kilos left. Maybe 300 on a good day.

You’ve just lost 70% of your load.

Would you do that run again? Would you keep using that highway?

Of course you wouldn’t. That would be insanity. You’d find another way. You’d hire a transport company that could deliver your gold safely.

Here’s the thing: that’s exactly what’s happening with your business data right now.

The short version

Between the moment a customer acts on your website and the moment it reaches your analytics, up to 70% of your business data is lost — eaten by ad blockers, privacy browsers, and Google’s globally-enforced consent mode. That missing data doesn’t just dent your reports; it means you’re feeding AI a fraction of reality and making decisions from a sketch. The fix is server-side tracking: capture events before the browser, and land clean data in your own BigQuery warehouse. Seresa’s Transmute Engine™ does exactly that — from $99 a year.

The Highway Your Data Travels — And the Robbers Waiting on It

Every time someone visits your website, clicks your ad, watches your video, or fills in a form — that’s gold.

But not in the way most people think. It’s not gold because it’s a nice metric to look at. It’s not gold because you can put it on a slide and feel good about it.

Data is gold — and here are eight reasons why it matters to YOU, not just to the tech people

1

You made a sale last week. Do you know WHY? Not “sort of why.” Not “I think it was that Facebook ad.” Do you know exactly which ad, which page they landed on, how many times they came back before buying, and what finally made them click “purchase”? Because if you don’t know WHY someone bought, you can’t make it happen again. That sale was lucky. The next one is a guess. Data turns luck into a repeatable system.

2

Your best customer is out there — and they have 10,000 twins. Right now, somewhere online, there are thousands of people who look exactly like the person who just bought from you. Same interests, same behaviour, same problems your product solves. Google Ads exists to find those twins for you. But Google can only find them if you tell it who the original buyer was. If 70% of that buyer’s data never arrived — because ad blockers ate it, because consent mode dropped it — Google is searching for twins of a ghost. Your ad money is funding a manhunt with a blurry photograph.

3

You’re spending money on ads that might be doing NOTHING — and you can’t tell. You’ve got a campaign running. It’s getting clicks. But is it getting sales? If the conversion data was stolen on the highway — and for 30-50% of events, it is — you think the campaign is “still gathering data.” It’s not. The data was taken. You’re paying for a campaign that might have died two weeks ago, and nobody told you because the death certificate was lost in the mail.

4

Knowing what DOESN’T work saves you more than knowing what does. I worked with a client who sold a coffee product. They used social influencers to drive sales — dozens of them, each with their own daily spend. For three months, they tracked everything: daily costs, lead generation, and actual sales per influencer. Not vanity metrics. Not “engagement.” Revenue per influencer, per day, in a spreadsheet.

And here’s the funny thing — they literally did use a spreadsheet. Probably still do. But they got smart and piped that spreadsheet into BigQuery every day to secure it for long-term analysis — I was part of the team that built this for them. Raw numbers in, strategic intelligence out. That’s not a million-dollar data project. That’s a spreadsheet and a pipeline. Transmute Engine™ makes exactly this sort of thing easy for you as a small business owner, without lifting a finger or writing a line of code.

After three months, the data told a story no gut feeling could have: the top 10% of influencers were generating the vast majority of sales. The bottom 50%+ were costing money and producing almost nothing.

So they paid the top performers more — and dropped over half the rest.

Result? They saved over $50,000 a month in costs. Total sales from that social media marketing campaign alone increased by just over 35%.

That’s what data does. Not “nice to know” data. DECISION data. The kind that tells you where to cut and where to double down. But they could only make that call because they tracked every dollar in, every dollar out, every sale, every influencer, every day for three months. If 70% of that conversion data had been lost on the highway? They’d still be paying influencers who weren’t selling a single bag of coffee.

Now — you might be reading that and thinking: “That’s quite sophisticated. That’s a big operation. That’s not really my level.”

Stop right there. Because that coffee company? That’s a $100 million ARR business. And yes, they probably started with more resources than you. But the data is what got them to the top — and the data is what keeps them there. The same thinking, the same approach, the same DECISION data — scaled down — is exactly what AI now makes possible for your business too — and they didn’t have Transmute Engine to auto-solve 90% of their issues.

Don’t think small anymore. You have AI. You have tools that didn’t exist two years ago, such as ours. The gap between what a $100 million company can do with data and what YOUR company can do is closing faster than at any point in business history.

So where do you sit right now? Further down in this article, you’ll find something we call the Data Wellness Score — a simple scale from red to green that tells you exactly where your business is on the data health ladder. You might be deep in the red. That’s OK — most small businesses are. The point is you can see the rungs, and every rung is climbable. The businesses in green, relaxing in Data Heaven, didn’t start there. They climbed. And the steps are laid out below.

Keep reading. There’s a lot more in this article — and it’s absolutely gold.

5

Your competitor isn’t smarter than you. They just see more. Ever wonder why a competitor seems to know exactly what to post, when to run ads, which products to push? They’re not geniuses. They’re not psychic. They just have more data — cleaner data, fuller data — and they’re making decisions from 90% of reality while you’re making decisions from 30%. Same brain. Different vision. That’s it.

6

You’re asking AI for advice with one eye closed. You’ve probably tried AI chat by now — we use Claude. Maybe you asked it to analyse your marketing or suggest improvements. And it gave you a beautiful, confident answer. But you fed it a spreadsheet with 30% of the picture. AI doesn’t say “by the way, this data is incomplete.” It just works with what you gave it. It’s like asking a doctor to diagnose you, but you only told them about three of your ten symptoms. The prescription might be wrong — not because the doctor is bad, but because you accidentally hid the truth.

7

Every day you don’t collect data, your future gets dumber. This one hurts. Data isn’t just about today. Six months of clean data shows you seasonal patterns. A year shows you what actually works versus what you thought worked. Two years gives you intelligence no competitor can buy — because they can’t go back in time and collect YOUR data from YOUR customers. There is no backfilling data — it’s a moving river and you have to dive in. But here’s the brutal part: you cannot backfill data you never captured. Today’s missing data is gone. Tomorrow’s is too, unless you start now. Every day without clean collection is a day you’ll wish you had back. You may have heard the old saying: the best time to plant a tree was six years ago; the next best time is today. The same is true for your data.

8

Your data is the ONE thing nobody can steal from you — if you own it. Your competitors can copy your website tonight. They can copy your ads, your pricing, your product descriptions. AI makes that easier than ever. But they cannot copy two years of YOUR customer data, YOUR conversion patterns, YOUR audience behaviour sitting in YOUR data warehouse. That’s the one asset that gets more valuable every single day and that nobody — not a competitor, not a platform, not an algorithm change — can take. That’s why it’s gold. And unlike gold, it ALWAYS goes up in value. Unless you never collected it in the first place. Then there’s nothing to protect.

Data isn’t gold because it’s a nice metric to look at on a Tuesday morning. Data is gold because it’s the only way to repeat success, stop wasting money, and build something your competitors can’t copy.

And right now, between the moment that event happens and the moment it lands in your analytics, it gets robbed. Repeatedly.

Gorilla Robber #1: Ad blockers.

As of 2025, 29.5% of internet users worldwide — roughly 1.77 billion people — use ad-blocking tools (GWI via Backlinko, 2025). In the US, it’s 32.5%. In Germany, it climbs past 49%. For tech-savvy audiences? Over 58%. These aren’t edge cases. One in three of your visitors is invisible to your tracking before they even see your first page.

Gorilla Robber #2: Privacy browsers.

Safari, Firefox, Brave — they all block tracking by default now. Not because they’re evil. Because their users demanded it. Your GA4 tag? Blocked at the browser level before it even fires.

Gorilla Robber #3: Consent mode — and this one went global overnight.

If you’re operating in Europe — or serving European visitors — you need a consent banner. And if that banner is legally compliant with an equally visible “Reject” button? The etracker Consent Benchmark Report 2025 found that roughly 60% of visit data is lost on average. Only 31% of European users currently accept tracking cookies (Getconzent, 2026). For the rest? If you’re running Basic Consent Mode — which most small businesses are — that’s 100% data loss for every user who clicks “No.” Not estimated. Not modelled. Just gone.

But here’s what most people outside Europe don’t realise: Google didn’t just enforce consent for EU traffic. It took the easy route and enforced it globally. Not just California rules. Not just British rules. Not just EU rules. Globally. One policy, every user, everywhere. We don’t blame them — trying to manage different consent rules for every jurisdiction would have been a circus. But the impact was brutal: if you’re in Australia, Singapore, the Philippines, Brazil, anywhere — and you’re using GA4 with consent mode active — you got caught in the same net. Your data is being filtered through European privacy rules whether your customers are in Munich or Manila.

The good news? Server-side tracking bypasses this entirely. Transmute Engine™ captures your events at the server level — before consent mode, before ad blockers, before the highway robbery even begins. You take back control of your own data. Right now the pipeline runs WordPress to BigQuery and wherever else you want to send it. We have plans to expand that offering soon.

Gorilla Robber #4: Google’s own rules.

GA4’s behavioural modelling — the thing that’s supposed to fill in the gaps — only activates if you hit a minimum threshold: 1,000 events per day from consenting users AND 1,000 events per day from non-consenting users, for seven consecutive days. Most small businesses don’t come close. If you’re below that threshold, modelling never kicks in. The missing data isn’t estimated. It’s simply deleted from reality.

Add them all up. Ad blockers take 30-40%. Consent takes another 30-60% of what’s left.

And pixel-only advertisers? They’re blind to 30-50% of their actual conversions (SignalBridge 2026 Server-Side Tracking Benchmark). Server-side tracking fares far better — but even it still has to get past the other robbers above.

Transmute Engine™ puts server-side tracking at its core: every event is transmitted server-side through our own managed servers.

You started with 700 kilos of gold. You arrived with 200.

But Here’s the Part Nobody Tells You

Losing the data is bad. But it gets worse.

Because now you take that 200 kilos — that 30% of reality — and you hand it to AI and say: “Tell me what’s going on with my business.”

And AI does its job. It analyses. It finds patterns. It gives you a confident, well-structured, ten-point answer. It looks brilliant.

But it’s working with 30% of the picture. It doesn’t know what it doesn’t have. It can’t tell you “by the way, 70% of your data never arrived.” It just… fills in the gaps with assumptions. And you, sitting there reading that beautifully formatted answer, think you’ve got the full picture.

You don’t. You’ve got a sketch drawn from a witness who only saw the last three minutes of a two-hour film.

I call this being in hell, underwater, with a back door to another hell.

Because the deception isn’t AI’s fault. AI is honest with what it’s given. The deception is inherent — it’s in your own mind. You think you’ve got something solid. You’ve patched together what survived the highway, and you wonder why your campaigns aren’t working, why your content isn’t converting, why your competitors seem to know things you don’t — and then spend weeks chatting on Reddit with others, trying to work out together how to solve the problem!

The Only Difference Between Small and Big Business

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: big businesses don’t have this problem.

Not because they’re smarter. Not because they have better products. Not because they have magic AI that small businesses can’t access.

They have clean data transport companies. They build their own data pipelines. They use server-side tracking that bypasses the highway entirely. Their data never touches a browser, never meets an ad blocker, never asks for consent to exist. It flows directly from the event to their own data warehouse, where AI can interrogate the full, unfiltered picture.

And then there’s the uncomfortable truth about the companies making the privacy rules. Apple and Google enforce consent, block cookies, shut down tracking — and it doesn’t affect them one bit. Why? Because they have walled gardens. Logged-in users across multiple apps, multiple devices, multiple services. They KNOW who’s on their sites, what they’re doing, what they’re buying. They have the data already — behind their own walls. That’s why they can still sell those audiences to advertisers while telling everyone else to play by stricter rules.

You might think that’s an unfair advantage. And maybe it is. But strip away the emotion and it’s really just a data advantage. Nothing more. They collect data. They store data. They use data. That’s the whole trick.

The difference between a small company and a big company is the infrastructure data gap. That’s the only difference that still exists.

AI has become the great equaliser — for talent, for tools, for capability. But AI can’t equalise what you don’t have. You must be the one to make the decision to collect and store YOUR data. Only you can do that. We can help you close that gap. You just have to get started. Seresa is here to help.

And you have to get started today. Because you’ve probably already delayed 5, 6, 7 years — I know I did. Pre-AI, data was a premium idea. A “nice to have.” Too difficult. Too hard. Too costly in both time and money. It was something big companies did and small businesses admired from a distance.

But now? The tools are here. AI is here to help you at the back end — your in-house data analyst for pennies on the dollar. And we’re here to transport your data safely off the highway.

Everything else has dissolved. AI has made quality design accessible. AI has made quality code accessible. We run Seresa on a very tight team and punch 20 times above our weight, because we use AI for almost everything — producing systems, monitoring systems, writing, analysing.

The playing field is level on talent. It’s level on tools. The only place it’s still tilted is data infrastructure. And that tilt is what we’re here to fix.

So What’s the Value of Data to YOU?

Before the AI era, most small businesses relied on GA4 and… never really used it. Be honest — did you? The interface was complicated. The reports were tedious. You’d look at one chart, maybe two, get confused by “sessions vs users vs engaged sessions,” and go back to running your business on gut feel.

That was fine. Pre-2026, small businesses didn’t have access to meaningful AI analysis. It wasn’t a common thing.

But now? The pipeline exists. BigQuery — Google’s data warehouse — is accessible and affordable (basically free for small business). AI tools like Claude sit on top and answer questions in plain English. The infrastructure that used to cost enterprise budgets is now available to any business willing to set it up.

The tools are here. The question isn’t “what can AI do?” The question is “do you know why you should feed it?”

Because AI can only grow your business if you give it data to analyse about YOUR business. Not industry averages. Not benchmarks. Not someone else’s processed insights. Your data. Your events. Your customers. Your patterns.

Without that? AI is just a very articulate guesser.

Let’s Run a Dataflow Scenario — Because This Gets Real Fast → YouTube

Imagine you’re a YouTuber. You’re using the popular analytics tools — there’s a couple of good ones. You look at your video performance and it’s great. They even give you a little AI chat that analyses your data and tells you what’s wrong.

“People are dropping off in the first three seconds,” the AI says. “Your hook isn’t strong enough.”

Fair enough. Easy stuff.

But what happens when viewers consistently drop off at 25 seconds? Does the AI have access to your script — what you actually said at that moment? Does it know about your other videos where the drop-off happened at 45 seconds instead of 23? Can it cross-reference the thumbnails, the titles, the descriptions across your entire back catalogue?

Can it see what happened after someone clicked through to your website? Did they buy? Did they bounce? Did they read three pages and then come back next week?

The answer, on every single third-party analytics platform, is no.

Those tools show you YouTube data through YouTube’s window. They can’t see your website. They can’t see your sales. They can’t cross-reference your scripts with your retention curves. They can’t tell you “at 4:32, 40% of viewers left — and at 4:32, you were talking about pricing, which also caused drop-offs in three other videos.”

That level of analysis is virtually free — if your data is already in your own warehouse. You’re already paying for an AI subscription. Asking one more question costs nothing. But you can’t ask that question if the data is scattered across five platforms that don’t talk to each other.

You believe you have the full picture, but that impression is based on a misperception of the facts.

Ed Lawrence from YouTube

If you want proof of what a data-focused approach does for a YouTube business, look at Ed Lawrence.

Ed built Film Booth to 370,000+ subscribers and hundreds of millions of views — and he’s now launched a new channel, Ed Lawrence, focused purely on helping business owners use YouTube to drive revenue, not just views.

I’ve learned a lot from Ed over the years, and his new material resonates strongly — because he’s now steel-focused on dollars, not clicks, the same as us.

Ed’s whole philosophy comes down to one shift: he stopped using YouTube Studio to make decisions and started tracking which videos actually generated sales. The result? He collected $500,000 in a single month. $1.3 million in three months. One video alone pulled in over $220,000.

He was so committed to this data-first approach that he built his own product — RevTrack — which tracks clicks, sales, and sign-ups directly from YouTube video description links. His tagline says it all: “When I could finally see which of my videos were generating sales, I stopped making videos that didn’t make money.”

That’s not a story about YouTube tricks or viral hacks. That’s a story about data. Ed stopped guessing which content worked and started knowing. Revenue per video — not views, not subscribers, not likes. Revenue. And you can only see that with data.

We Mapped This Problem — And We Gave It a Name

At Seresa, we’ve been sitting with this problem for months. And we decided to map the whole thing out — the thinking process, the stages, the mindsets that small businesses go through at each point on the journey.

We gave it a name. We call it Data Health — and we built a whole framework around it, the Data Wellness Model, to diagnose it and treat it.

That name is not unique — nor does it stand out — but it does remind you of a basic fact. Your data can be sick!

For example: Data Anaemia — when your business isn’t getting enough data flowing into its own systems. You’re surviving on what the platforms drip-feed you through their dashboards. You’re data-starved, and you don’t even know it.

Or Daycare Dependency — when you THINK you’re healthy because a third-party tool shows you numbers and lets you talk to an AI coach. But the data never comes home. You’re comfortable. You’re not 100% well though. Your data still needs more help.

Or my personal favourite: The Comfort Lie — the symptom where you say “We’re fine, we have [analytics tool]” and genuinely believe it.

We even created a Data Wellness Score — from 0 to 100 — so you can judge where your business actually sits on the journey from Data Sick to Data Rich.

The first milestone

Admission — recognising you’re data sick. Score: 10 / 100.

The final milestone

Silverback — two or more years of accumulated data in your own warehouse, with AI that gets smarter every month. Strategic intelligence no competitor can replicate. Score: 100 / 100.

Why Silverback? You might realise why we have a mascot called Gorilla. Gorillas are innate data gatherers and processors — they map their territory, they know where every food source is, they remember which trees bear fruit and when. How else do you think they stay alive in a hostile jungle with limited food? They don’t guess. They know. That’s what your data does for your business.

Most small businesses? They score under 20 and don’t know it.

The ones that score 80+? They’re not smarter. They just got discharged from daycare.

The Transport Company That Costs Less Than Your Coffee

You wouldn’t drive that highway with your gold and accept losing 70%.

You’d hire a transport company.

We built that transport company. We call it Transmute Engine™.

For our Harvest Plan Light — which captures your WordPress site events, processes them server-side (bypassing ad blockers, bypassing consent loss, bypassing the highway entirely), and delivers clean data into your own BigQuery warehouse where AI can interrogate it — the setup takes about three minutes.

The cost? $99 USD a year. That’s $8.25 a month. Can you believe that — now that you know data’s massive value?

For that, you claw back roughly 60% of the data you were losing. Your AI goes from working with 30% of reality to working with 90%+. The difference isn’t marginal. It’s the difference between guessing and knowing.

And because the data can sit in YOUR warehouse — on our Harvest plans upward, it’s 100% yours in your own BigQuery. Even on Harvest Lite, your data is stored securely and accessible to you — not VidIQ’s, not Google’s, not anyone else’s — it accumulates. It doesn’t expire after 60 days. It doesn’t get throttled by API quotas. It doesn’t vanish when you cancel a subscription — even ours!

It grows. Like a tree you planted. And the longer it grows, the more fruit it bears.

We call those Data Trees (coined by Seresa). The businesses planting them today will have years of insights to harvest. The businesses who wait will arrive at the table with empty plates and hungry AI.

Where Are You on the Journey?

So now you know data is gold. You know 70% of it is being stolen on the highway. You know AI is only as good as what you feed it. You know the infrastructure data gap is the last remaining difference between small and big.

The question is: what do you DO about it?

That’s what the Data Wellness Model is for. It maps the whole route out of data sickness like a hospital journey — a 0–100 Data Wellness Score, the named conditions holding you back, and a treatment for each one — from Admission (recognising you’re sick) all the way to Silverback (years of your own data, and intelligence no competitor can touch).

We laid the whole path out, step by step — the complete diagnostic manual, every named condition, every treatment, and the scoring system — in Part 2: The Data Wellness Model: A Self-Diagnosis Guide for Small Businesses. This article told you WHY data matters. That one shows you exactly where you sit — and HOW to get well.

But you don’t need the whole map to take the first step. The first step is the simplest one of all: stop the bleeding. Get your data flowing off the highway and into a warehouse you own — which is exactly what the transport company above does.

One Last Thing

We’re still learning too. AI is new. We are a startup. I’m David Anttony, founder of Seresa, and I’ve created eight previous businesses. This is my ninth and final. But it’s like starting fresh — because AI is so different, everything is so new.

We’re all learning together in this boat.

The question is: are you learning, or does your boat have data holes in it?

Stop losing 70% of your gold on the highway. Start planting Data Trees.
