Three Channels, One Platform

Open ChatGPT on your laptop, click a link in a conversation, and the visit reaches your site with chatgpt.com as the HTTP referrer. GA4 classifies that as Referral — or, since May 2026, AI Assistant. Clean attribution. Useful data.

Now open the same conversation in the ChatGPT mobile app. Tap the same link. The app’s embedded browser strips the referrer header during the handoff. GA4 sees a visit with no source, no medium, no campaign. It files it under Direct. As of early 2026, the ChatGPT mobile apps had roughly 68 million combined iOS and Android monthly downloads — all sending traffic that arrives looking identical to someone typing your URL by hand.

Then there’s ChatGPT Search. OpenAI appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to citation links, but often without a utm_medium value. A UTM hit without a medium sets medium=(not set) in GA4’s default grouping. The result isn’t Referral or Direct — it’s Unassigned, a fourth bucket that most teams never check.

The same user, on the same platform, clicking the same link can generate three different channel classifications in GA4. The difference isn’t what the user did. It’s how the technical infrastructure between ChatGPT and your analytics handled the handoff.

The Referrer Stripping Problem

Four mechanisms strip the referrer from ChatGPT clicks — and only one of them leaves any trace GA4 can use.

The first mechanism is the mobile app. ChatGPT’s iOS app opens external links in WKWebView, Apple’s embedded browser component. The Referer header doesn’t survive the handoff. Android does the same thing through its in-app WebView or Chrome Custom Tabs. Both drop the referrer. This isn’t a bug — it’s how mobile operating systems handle cross-app navigation.

The second is the noreferrer attribute. Paid ChatGPT accounts apply noreferrer to inline links inside chat replies. Free accounts don’t. The users most likely to convert — paying ChatGPT subscribers with demonstrated willingness to spend — are systematically the ones whose traffic is invisible in GA4.

The third is copy-paste. When someone reads a ChatGPT answer, copies the URL, and pastes it into a new browser tab, no referrer header is passed. This is the most common interaction pattern for users who want to save or share a link from an AI conversation. GA4 sees a Direct visit.

The fourth is the site’s own referrer policy. A strict-origin-when-cross-origin policy — Google’s recommended default — sends only the origin domain, not the full URL. That’s enough for GA4 to identify chatgpt.com. But a no-referrer policy on your site wipes even that.

Clickport’s analysis of 371,847 sessions in April 2026 found that 35.7% of AI traffic arrived with no referrer at all. Loamly’s larger dataset of 446,405 visits put the figure at 70.6%. GA4’s AI Assistant Channel — What It Catches and Misses

Google launched a native AI channel in May 2026. It helps, but it only sees the traffic that still carries a referrer.

On May 13, 2026, Google added a native AI Assistant channel to GA4’s Default Channel Group.
